I Have A WSIB Claim. Am I Entitled To Physiotherapy Treatment?

Work-related injuries range from repetitive strain injuries to muscles and tendons to fractures and mild traumatic brain injuries due to falling or tripping.  It also includes lower back pain due to prolonged sitting in the wrong posture, also known as the neck/upper back/upper limb injuries (NUBUL). These injuries can result while sitting, standing, lifting and handling.  Although work-related injuries vary significantly in severity and involved area, one common complaint is pain and disability caused by pain and injury.

Do I Need Referral For WSIB Physiotherapy?

If you have an approved WSIB claim, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to start WSIB physiotherapy. WSIB recognizes physiotherapists & chiropractors as primary care providers, so you do not need to wait to see you doctor and can directly access physiotherapy in a registered clinic after reporting your injury.

What Is The Step-by-Step Process To Access WSIB Physiotherapy?

Although accessing physiotherapy treatment after a work related injury is an easy and straightforward process, but it helps to know the steps. Here’s how to access WSIB physiotherapy in Ontario:

Step 1: Report Your Workplace Injury to WSIB

After sustaining an injury or experiencing pain related to your work, report your injury or condition as soon as possible to your supervisor or employer. Your employer will notify WSIB. You can also directly report it to WSIB by calling WSIB at 1-800-387-0750 or using online portal. It helps to provide detailed information about the injury, location, extent of injury.

Step 2: Submit a WSIB Claim for Physiotherapy

File a WSIB claim by completing a Form 6 (Worker’s Report of Injury/Disease) with details about your injury and how it occurred. Your employer will also submit a form (Form 7). When you visit a healthcare provider for the said injury (Emergency department, family physician, physiotherapist, or chiropractor), they’ll fill out Form 8. These forms are available online and can be submitted directly on line.

Step 3: Find a WSIB-Registered Physiotherapist or Chiropractor

Choose a WSIB-registered physiotherapy clinic. Look for providers listed on WSIB’s website. Make sure the practitioner and administrative team are experienced with WSIB claims. A successful return to work program will include a combination of hands on treatments combined with progressive rehabilitation and work hardening.
