Stress Fracture Injuries & Treatments in Toronto

What are Stress Fractures?

stress fractureStress fractures are tiny cracks in the bones and are common in sports. These are caused as a result of the repetitive application of force on the same bone which is not strong enough or is surrounded by weak muscles and ligaments to bear the pressure. Stress fractures are common among runners, cricket bowers and gymnasts. Stress fractures usually occur in tibia and foot. A gradual weakening of the bones as a result of osteoporosis is also a cause of stress fractures in the foot and sometimes in spinal vertebrae.

Here are the common symptoms of stress fractures:

  • Consistent pain when the activity is carried out
  • Point tenderness at or near the fracture site
  • Swelling may or may not be present
  • The pain subsides when rest is taken

Typically, stress fractures heal on their own with slight immobilization and rest. If treatment is required for pain management and immobilization, it is a team task that involves a medical doctor and/or a physiotherapist or athletic therapist. Stress fractures should be managed immediately by a physiotherapist or athletic therapist. This includes rest, pain management and education to prevent further injuries. A physical therapy program recommended by your physiotherapist plays a vital role in treating stress fractures and rehabilitating the bone through the process of recovery. Combined with other treatment methods, physical therapy can help regain the lost strength of the bone and helps in making it better again.
