PCL, or posterior cruciate ligament, functions as a connector between the femur (thighbone) and the tibia (shinbone). This ligament prevents the movement of tibia too far backward. An injury to the PCL requires a powerful force. One of the common causes of a posterior cruciate ligament injury is falling on a bent knee or hitting the bent knee to the dashboard in case of a car accident. Injuries to the PCL are not that common and are difficult to evaluate compared to other ligament injuries, as they are much more subtle. Most of the time, an injury to the PCL is accompanied by an injury to the bone, other ligaments, and cartilage.
These are some of the common symptoms of a PCL tear or injury.
A physical therapy program recommended by a physiotherapist plays a vital role in treating and rehabilitating the ligament after the injury. Combined with other treatment methods, physical therapy can help regain the lost strength of the ligament and help in its motion.
