Also known as Adhesive Capsulitis, frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and stiffness of the shoulder joint. It is a painful condition which, if left untreated, can lead to severe restriction of the movement of the shoulder joint, making it extremely difficult for the patient to perform their day to day tasks.
Shoulder pain can have many causes. Rotator cuff tendonitis, inflammation of rotator cuff tendon, is the most common cause of shoulder pain. The symptoms include dull achy pain of the top of the shoulder which gets worse with raising the arm above shoulder level, push, pull, reaching overhead or behind back.
An inflamed shoulder bursa is called shoulder bursitis. Bursa is a sac of fluid that decreases the friction of the tendons and muscles on joints. There are multiple bursas in shoulder area, the most important ones are called Deltoid bursa and Subacromial bursa. Subacromial bursitis is the most common shoulder bursitis which can cause severe shoulder pain and a limited range of motion. If left untreated, it can cause muscle weakness and chronic pain conditions.
Rotator Cuff Tears occur when the shoulder’s rotator cuff tendon tears due to trauma or continuous micro-trauma. Traumatic cuff tears occur as the result of lifting heavy loads, using improper posture and form during exercise or a fall on outstretched arm. Repeated micro-trauma tears occur over the duration of many weeks, months, and years.
As the most mobile joint in the body, the shoulder can rotate and move through a lot of directions. Unfortunately, the flip side of this dexterity is the fact that the shoulder is also the joint most prone to dislocations and subluxations (Partial dislocation).
Shoulder joint instability takes place when the humerus head, located on the upper end of the upper arm is forced out from the shoulder socket. This can occur due to overuse of the joint or sudden injury.
