Patellar Tendonitis Treatment in Toronto

What is Patellar Tendonitis?

Knee painPatellar Tendonitis, also commonly known as the Jumper’s knee, is a condition of the knee caused by an overuse injury. It is caused by overstressing of the patella tendon. Patellar tendonitis is common among athletes and players of volleyball, soccer basketball, tennis, skiing, and gymnastics. In older people, it is caused by the gradual degeneration of the joints, bones, and muscles over time.

A serious injury to the tendon can also cause patellar tendonitis. Patellar tendonitis can cause severe knee pain in addition to difficulty in movement.

Some of the common symptoms of patellar tendonitis include

  • Knee pain
  • Aggravated pain during landing, jumping and prolonged sitting
  • Tenderness of the patella tendon
  • The stiffness of the patella tendon in the morning
  • Thickening and swelling of the affected side

A physiotherapist will recommend some easy to do and highly effective exercises to help relieve pain and treat patellar tendonitis. Stretching is specifically found helpful in treating patellar tendonitis as it increases muscle strength and help in improving cardiovascular fitness.
