Overuse Syndrome Rehabilitation Programs in Toronto

What is Overuse Syndrome?

Overuse syndromeOveruse syndrome, as the name suggests, refers to the injuries as the result of repeated motions. These injuries are different in nature from acute injuries such as a sprained ankle as they occur over a period of time and commonly are not alarming enough for sufferers to take action and seek treatment.

Overuse injuries include repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and happen in athletes and none athletes. Overuse syndromes commonly involve tendons and muscles and affect other surrounding tissues such as fascia, nerve tissues, bursa and even bones causing inflammation and sometimes stress fracture.  These injuries are common in sports and in work settings that require the repetitive use of the same body part and muscle group over an extended period of time.

Here are some common symptoms of overuse syndrome:

  • Tenderness and pain
  • Feeling warmth to touch
  • Mild to moderate swelling
  • Redness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle tightness
  • Range of motion reduction in affected joints

The goal of physiotherapy is to restore full function of the joints, muscles, and bones. Physiotherapists examine and identify the type and severity of overuse syndrome and the structures the injury is affecting. A Physiotherapist then utilizes several manual therapy techniques and treatments to treat the pain and inflammation and also recommends exercises to resume strength and function.
