Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Service in Toronto

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Exercise to beat multiple sclerosisMultiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system which includes the brain and the spinal cord. For many unknown reasons including the attack of the immune system,  the protective covering on the nerve fibers is damaged which affects the speed that the messages travel along the nerve and causes communication issues between the brain and muscles and organs. MS causes the nerves to become permanently damaged or deteriorate themselves.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary from person to person depending on the type of nerve and the area of the nervous system being affected and the severity of the program. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Weakness or numbness in one or all limbs, it can occur in one side of the body at a time.
  • Complete or partial loss of vision and pain during eye movement
  • Double vision
  • Pain and tingling in parts of the body
  • Electric shock sensations with neck movements
  • Slurred speech, lack of coordination, fatigue, and dizziness
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Inability to walk
  • In very severe cases the respiratory and cardiac systems may be affected causing debilitating complications

Physiotherapists play an important role in maintaining mobility and strength and managing complications related to the condition.
