De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis affects the APL and the EPB, which are two thumb tendons. The thumb tendons, located alongside the edge of the wrist, exist through a synovial tunnel responsible for holding the tendons in position. When inflammation occurs, it constricts the tendons’ movements within the tunnel. This is known as De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis.

Repeated thumb and hand movements, holding hand at an angle, inflammation, scar tissue from a prior injury, and arthritic diseases can all cause De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis. Failure to treat the condition can cause the pain to spread to your forearm and you may hear a creaking noise called crepitus.
Through a clinical examination of your wrist, your physiotherapist can determine if you have De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis. To treat it, your physiotherapists may utilize various techniques and treatments and may even ask you to wear a thumb-spica splint to prevent your lower joints and wrist from moving.
