Chronic pain is defined as the pain that lasts more than 6 months when all the obvious signs of trauma and injury are resolved. It might be excruciating or mild, continuous or episodic, totally incapacitating or merely inconvenient. It takes an emotional and physical toll on the affected person. Chronic pain commonly develops after an acute injury, an infection or after surgery.
Chronic pain is more than just a pain syndrome, it not only affects patients’ physical being but affects their psychological and social well-being.
Chronic pain conditions are commonly associated with other problems such as fatigue, IBS, sleep disturbances, frequent mood swings, weakened immune system, anxiety, irritability, disability, and stress.
Physical therapy for chronic pain is focused on pain management using manual techniques, physical modalities, and mainly functional rehabilitation and education on understanding pain. The physical therapy is commonly combined with psychological interventions to assist patients to learn how to control their pain and pace themselves.
