What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Research shows that your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence one another from moment to moment. These links have a big impact on how we all learn to deal with major challenges in life. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) teaches people techniques to help them actively problem solve and teaches them to cope better with health challenges. In summary, you can change how you think, and how you think affects how you feel. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy employs this principle in treating patients dealing with chronic conditions including chronic pain. The goal is to assist patients to stay well or cope with a health problem by changing how they think so they can care for themselves and handle life’s challenges, feel better and avoid or cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Using CBT, a patient can learn to stop unhealthy thoughts and replace them with helpful thoughts. Healthy thinking also involves calming mind and body by using one or more techniques. These may include meditation, yoga, muscle relaxation, or guided imagery.

There is a mounting body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychotherapy and other psychological interventions in managing chronic pain and other chronic medical conditions.

Our psychotherapy services are designed with a focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Both of these techniques have been proven effective for the management of chronic pain and illness (Kabat-Zinn et al., 1985; Schmidt et al, 2011; McBeth et al, 2012).

Our psychotherapist provides individual assessment and consultation as well as group psychotherapy facilitation.
