What is a Baker’s Cyst?

Knee pain A Baker’s cyst, or Popliteal cyst, refers to a lump of fluid that forms behind the knee. It’s caused when surplus joint fluid in the knee is forced into a small sac of tissue behind it, filling up the sac and causing it to bulge into a cyst. The cyst is often painless, and it is entirely possible for it to disappear on its own. Some common symptoms of the condition include:

  • Tightness of the knee
  • Swelling behind the knee that worsens when standing
  • Stiffness behind the knee
  • Slight pain behind the knee, especially when bending or straightening it
  • Occasionally, redness and swelling in the lower leg
  • Fatigue & restless leg at night

How is Baker’s Cyst Treated?

  • Physiotherapy consisting of stretching, strengthening and pain management
  • Acupuncture and dry needling
  • Pain relieving medications
  • Rest
